Planning Your Wedding Reception Flowers

Wedding season is in full swing and we have been busy with a host of different events in the past few weeks. Following our recent post on Planning Your Bridal Bouquet, this month we thought we would take a closer look at reception flowers. Here are five things to consider when planning the flowers for your wedding reception.

1. Making the Most of your Flowers

There are a few different ways that you can make the most of your reception flowers, whether that be throughout the day or afterwards. Large arrangements from the ceremony can sometimes be used to decorate the reception, which is a good way to maximise the budget. Smaller arrangements make for beautiful gifts, and if you select a mixture of cut flowers and plants why not replant them as a memory of the day?

2. The Heights

For both wedding receptions and dinner parties we often recommend selecting arrangements combining different heights as this draws the eye around the room. However, it is also important to consider the height of table centrepieces once your guests are seated. Low arrangements work particularly well on the head table as the bride and groom remain in full view, both for the guests and photographer.

3. The Colour Scheme

If your wedding has a clear colour scheme then changing the shade gradually from day to night is a beautiful way to create subtle variation. For example some people choose white flowers for the ceremony, light pinks for the reception and vibrant pinks for the evening party.

4. The Food

A key part of any reception is the food, and it shouldn’t be forgotten when planning the flowers! Give your florist an idea of the menu so they can advise accordingly, avoiding smells and tastes that will clash. This is especially relevant when it comes to flowering herbs. Mint is lovely alongside lamb, but not chicken. Rosemary smells wonderful, but it will clash with fish.

5. The Lighting

When planning your reception flowers, don’t forget to consider what could go alongside them. The effect of candles and tea lights should not be underestimated, and they are usually a beautiful finishing touch.
